A useless ASEAN will lead to the Chinafication of the entire Southeast Asia

ASEAN countries

ASEAN countries

I refer to TJ A. Burgonio’s “Philippines, Vietnam urge strong Asean action vs China” in the Philippine Daily Inquirer, May 12th with regard to the on-going 24th ASEAN Summit being held at Burma.

The world is well aware that besides the usual chores and normal talks of the countries involved in the said region, the highlights of this year’s meeting is not only the first ever time that Burma (a former pariah state) serves as the host, but the question of China’s (now, the world’s leading bully besides the US) aggression to the region.

As accurately said by the said report:

“Disturbed by China’s provocation in the South China Sea, the Philippines and Vietnam urged the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (Asean) on Sunday to make a united stand to maintain its relevance.

“At a summit hosted by Burma (Myanmar), the Philippines and Vietnam pushed for stronger action to confront China’s aggressive behaviour and some ASEAN leaders expressed concern over China’s provocative moves against the two members of the bloc.”

Comment:

I overwhelmingly concur with the contention that it is only with a united and a collective stand by ASEAN that it can maintain its relevance and honour.

A fragmented ASEAN is a good for nothing association! The regional bloc must unite to show to themselves, and to the world, that it is a solid organisation, not a mere collection of nations pretending to be united. However, sad to say, it simply a collection of countries each pursuing their own personal self-interests!

I am commending the firmness and bravery of the Philippines and Vietnam in pushing for a stronger and firmer action to confront China’s aggressive behaviour.

I am also applauding the utterance of apprehension and expression of concern of some ASEAN leaders with regard to China’s provocative moves against Manila and Hanoi.

Yet, unfortunately having said that, I am disgustingly disappointed with the said organisation for not showing enough resolve, firmness and boldness in condemning China, and uniting with the cause of Vietnam and the Philippines on the face of China’s continuous bullying and stand-off with the said two nations.

Again to quote from the report:

“But in their joint statement issued after the summit, the ASEAN leaders made no direct mention of China, indicating that few were willing to risk their countries’ political and economic relationship with the regional powerhouse.”

Comment:

What kind of organisation is this? Two of its members are being victimised arbitrarily and repeatedly by a bully and some the nations’ leaders are “concerned.” Yet at the end of the day, the statement that they issued does not even contain a word about the biggest problem of the region?

How come this so-called organisation does not have the guts to directly and categorically name and mention and point to China’s bullyism, aggression and imperialism to the region?

This is absurd!

This year’s summit is the next worst summit next to the meeting held in Cambodia, wherein the so-called ASEAN, in its 45 year existence, had for the first time failed to issue a joint statement!

This year, yes they did, but what is the point of issuing a joint statement which does not specifically mention the problem?

That stupid so-called joint statement undeniably shows not unity of the ASEAN, but its division, cowardice and playing it safe attitude!

This is a shame!

Technically, this year’s edition of the said summit is just a slightly ‘better’ version of the Phnom Penh meeting, except that if one will look deeply and closely, the end result is the same, which is a shame and a disgrace to the so-called region’s organisation!

What is happening now or what is on-going now in Burma, is nothing but drama and comedy of the worst tragic kind!

What is the purpose for this so-called organisation if they will not come out with a strong and firm and unequivocal statement that indisputably shows their united stand?

The whole world is laughing at this preposterous and lousy organisation, because it is a good for nothing bunch of useless, selfish and cowardly nations!

To restate my stand and my view, ASEAN is nothing but an organisation that is pretending to be united, but the sad truth is they are just fooling and duping themselves!

What is the point of holding each others’ hands, when the other members are merely watching from the sidelines while some of their member’s feet and arms are being beaten by an intruder?

What is the point of having a yearly summit or meeting, if they cannot even agree on the common enemy?

What is the point of all these gatherings and photo ops, when they cannot even issue a joint statement that is truly joint, and not disjointed?

The answer is clear as the sky: few countries from ASEAN “were willing to risk their countries’ political and economic relationship with the regional powerhouse.”

Which means that the so-called ASEAN has no concept of “united we stand,” but is merely divided to the core, based on their individual self-interests!

Such a shame; so sad but true!

Enough of this fiasco, enough of this drama, enough of this lies and pretensions!

There is no such thing as ASEAN; it is just a matter of “to each its own!”

Nonetheless, let me issue a stern and dire warning to the so-called ASEAN for the nth time while it still stands:

To the idiotic so-called ASEAN: enough of your words of concern and apprehension, which have no sense or meaning, because words without concrete action are nothing.

Enough of your pretensions and lies and fake solidarity, because it’s been a long time since you weret united.

The good for nothing statement that you “jointly” issued has clearly portrayed the betrayal of the very principles which are supposedly the very values and principles which you all agreed upon to establish the so-called organisation in the first place!

ASEAN is dead! Sad but true, but your so-called organisation is nothing but a zombie and a dead horse worthy of nothing!

If you idiots will not unite and forge true solidarity amongst your ranks and stand up as one against bullish and aggressive China, then that bully and emerging imperialist will conquer and overrun you all – one by one. They will turn the whole Southeast Asian region into a red Chinese lake of fire!

Now that you still have time, grab the opportunity to unite as one; confront and fight China’s bullyism, naked aggression, provocations and imperialism in the region!

Why?

Because there is no iota of doubt that, a useless ASEAN will undeniably lead consequently to the Sinomisation of the entire Southeast Asia and beyond.

Either you join your ranks and unite or all of you shall perish, one by one, like miserable good for nothing  chickens, worthy of nothing.

Idiots, you have been warned!

  1. China Must Respect International Law and Remove HD-981 Oil Rig from Vietnam’s Waters
In the past few years, China has escalated tensions in the Southeast Asia Sea (South China Sea) by introducing the infamous nine-dotted line which claims sovereignty over 80% of the Southeast Asia Sea and which has zero legal basis, ignoring all relevant international law, norms, and conventions. The Chinese activities pose a real threat to the territorial waters of the countries in the region as well as to maritime security and the freedom of navigation.

Disregarding international law, China has intensified provocations and harassment in Vietnamese territorial waters by i) invading the Paracel Islands in 1974; ii) invading Reef Island and some reefs in the Spratly Islands of Vietnam in 1988; iii) imposing a ban on fishing in the Spratly Islands’ waters in 2009; iv) attacking, destroying, capturing Vietnamese fishing boats, and demanding ransom; v) cutting cables of seismic vessels of Vietnam National Petroleum Corporation in Vietnam’s Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) in 2011 and 2012; vi) inviting bidders to explore oil and gas in the continental shelf of Vietnam in 2012; vii) establishing an administration known as “Sansha City” which illegally governs the Paracels and the Spratly Islands of Vietnam in 2012.

Most recently, on May 5, 2014, China made a dangerous and brazen move in the Southeast Asia Sea by “deploying an oil rig for the first time on the Vietnam’s EEZ, and on its continental shelf, about 120 nautical miles off its coast, where the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea guarantees Vietnam exclusive rights to hydrocarbon and mineral resources.” (The New York Times, “Trouble in South China Sea”, May 9, 2014). Moreover, China has deployed hundreds of vessels including coast guard ships, maritime police ships, armed fishing boats, and naval vessels (e.g., corvettes, missiles boats, landing ships) and surveillance and strike aircraft in the territorial waters and air zone of Vietnam. Chinese ships deliberately rammed and shot water cannons at Vietnamese maritime police and coast guard ships in Vietnam’s EEZ and continental shelf, damaging Vietnam’s law enforcement vessels and injuring crew members.

The Vietnamese people love peace, and we are exercising utmost restraint. We adhere to international law to resolutely protect our national sovereignty and legitimate interests. The provocative Chinese infringements and intimidation threaten peace and stability, security and freedom of navigation in the Southeast Asia Sea. Peace-loving people deserve to be informed of the threats by the aggressive Chinese government.

We call (i) for the Chinese government to de-escalate the tensions and remove HD-891 from Vietnam’s EEZ, (ii) for peace lovers all over the world to denounce the Chinese activities in the Southeast Asia Sea, (iii) for worldwide support to fight against the aggressive Chinese authorities.

  2. The problems lies squarely on Philippines illegal possession of the Spratlys, specifically the Kalayaan Islands. This start the chain reaction of further disputes. Marcos annexed the Kalayaans in 1978 by decree. The islands themselves were stolen since 1956 by a Filippino Tomas Cloma under res nullis pretext while China and Taiwan were busy fighting civil war.

Meanwhile Philippines plan to drill in Recto Bank. She is asking for trouble and China may just drill next door. Why complain when the area in dispute should not be drilled until settled? It make sense for China to drill inside Philippines 200 miles EEZ but outside 12 miles territorial zone.

US will not dare to interfere as this is UNCLOS related, nothing to do with sovereignty. US is not a party of UNCLOS understand? Same goes if China drill in 200 miles EEZ outside 12 miles territorial zone in Malaysia, Brunei, Indonesia. They are NOT sovereign but UNCLOS related, extracting resources from the sea, not land, so none of the ASEAN nation can use sovereignity as basis to counter Chinese claim. It make sense to Chinaficize the 200 miles EEZ zone, nothing under law precludes China from having a piece of the pie.

Vietnam situation is where bilateral negotiation should be done to achieve a Grand Bargain. Vietnam instigate trouble by drilling first in disputed areas in the south a couple of years ago with Indian JV. Why fuss over Chinese drilling in similarly disputed islands?

If anybody have valid arguments, I welcome their opinion here. Nobody can answer my questions so far, any takers?

    • so give me a complete coordinates of your so called 9 dash line? is the UN accept your 9 dash line? if your argument is valid then why not present those facts or what you called “historical evidence” to the UNCLOS?

      • I have nothing to do with China’s Negotiation Tactics. It seems many observers are pretty amateurish. This is big man’s world, not for simpletons. China not going to UNCLOS YET is ITSELF a negotiation tactic. She WILL if she find it necessary. She just wait and see the outcome of the 4000 pages memorial Philppines file which I think will be thrown out the window due to Extra Judicial overreaching, filing charges against China that have Zero relevance to Philippines own 200 miles EEZ.

Nine Dash Line is not etched in stone, THAT is why China ask for Bilateral Negotiation so she can accomodate ALL other parties WITHOUT US interference. There is Power Play here, Just A Hint of US involvement like silly Philippines using US to help AUTOMATICALLY makes Negotiation with China Impossible.

China Will NEVER Be Slighted Plain & Simple. I guess you have very little understand of Eastern Culture, in particular related to China as Perception Is Reality from her viewpoint so she is very sensitive to ANY evidence of being intimidated by US which she will NEVER allow again.

Don’t talk about law and rights, because your bullish empire has no sense of respect, dignity, humanity and civility! Our country is an empire of thieves? Shame on you and shame to China!

PS: I doubt if you will understand what I’ve written! Your level of understanding is so lousy and so miserably poor! Sad but true!!!

I hope you enjoy being a Chinese neocolony rather than a Japanese one. Enjoy being a Chinese naval base once you get free from Japan.

      • @c Hiding behind ABC? Weak 50 pesos comment. Try harder.

Let the chip falls where they may. Smaller countries suffer from inferiority complex, self defeatist attitude, always thinking they cannot negotiate successfully in a bilateral manner with China. The enemy is their own poor attitude and sense of guilt possessing stolen properties.

Historical illustration: China at her peak does not bully the Malacca Sultanate. Instead her show of force was coupled with respect for the smaller countries and sending Hang Li Po as concubine for the Malacca sultan is evidence of Chinese genuine friendship, not crude gunboat diplomacy practiced by US, UK etc in the 19th century. China even protect the Malacaans from further Vietnamese piracy when they were threatened by the Vietnamese, so we see the usefulness of China as a protector against aggressive Vietnamese.

The only plausible explanation Philippines, Vietnam, Japan don’t want bilateral explanation is they have dirty hands, so they don’t want to negotiate, rather they want ‘group purchasing power’ so they can cover each other’s butt. Japan and Philippines most obvious example, both illegal sovereign claims to Diaoyu/Senkaku and Kalayaan islands.

The best cure for many people is to enlighten themselves. Read history, Wikipedia, US researchers give you plenty of knowledge to remove the cobwebs from your head. Have a nice day!

But we are not in the era where China can send Hang Li Pos to other lesser nations. We are in an era where the one with the strongest pair of balls and warships can browbeat other countries to submission. China will follow its Western teachers in dealing with wee pathetic little countries, which is by intimidation.

Why not, they’d think. We’re on top now!

I find it really fascinating, though, that an independence activist from an oppressed people has the nerve to negate the histories and rights of other peoples who have lived around the South China Sea (or whatever it’s called) since time immemorial – that the Han Chinese view of things is the only valid point of view. Might is right, eh?

I read history, you know, and that has been the prevailing theme across human cultures and eras. I’m not surprised China is not acting differently from other mega-nations in that regard.

Wailing about Japanese suppression of “muh culture” while cheering for gunboat diplomacy and borders which touch other peoples’ coastlines. You’re a real piece of work, dude.

“China will follow its Western teachers in dealing with wee pathetic little countries, which is by intimidation. ”

Here is where you go wrong. China is different from the West. Why? Because for the Chinese, Face is very important, so they won’t want to do anything that disturb their reputation. But of course nowadays with the Internet anybody can dish out dirt and fling at each other long after events occur. But anyway, the Chinese have a history of acting with CLASS, THERE IS NO NEED TO LEARN THE RUBBISH GUNBOAT DIPLOMACY FROM WESTERNERS.

What the Chinese do is always Front Load with Civilian Assets backed by military assets. It is up to the opponent to deal with China this way. Ram each other boats, go ahead! But the moment the military is introduced OR the enemy eg Vietnam ram into the oil rig for example, ‘civilian force’ will be introduced to shoot them, to sink them. This is no different from any other Coast Guard law enforcement in US or anywhere else where Harm Is Imminent.

So as you can see, the modern Chinese tactics is to Sit and see what you plan to do about it. Basically Negotiate Bilaterally or feel the pain!
