A visit to Shaoxing

Shaoxing is a smallish city in Zhejiang province about 200 km south east of Shanghai. Shaoxing is today mostly known for its fabric manufacturing.

It is a nice city surrounded by beautiful scenery. There are plenty of things to do and see in the area.

The highlight in the area is the East Lake (Dong Hu) Area. It is really peaceful and the scenery is just stunning. The best way to experience the East Lake is by boat.

The boats can only take three passengers and are steered by an old gentleman rowing with his feet. He will take you close to really spectacular cliffs and skilfully steer you into small caves.

The Keyan Scenic Area is also worth a visit. It is a huge park in the outskirts of Shaoxing. In the middle of the park is a massive Buddha statue in a rock.

The old part of Shaoxing is mainly dominated by celebrating the life of the well known Chinese author Lu Xun (1881-1936), who grew up there. Today there are street theatres performing his art work.
